Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated to a new level over the Strait of Hormuz. The US has claimed to have carried out airstrikes on multiple Iranian military installations. Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB (IRIB) reported that several people were injured in an attack on the southern port city of Sirik. Concurrently, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has cut short his visit to Iraq and returned to Tehran.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that “powerful” airstrikes were conducted against various targets in Iran in response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Citing a US official, it was reported that the airstrikes targeted Iranian air defense systems, coastal surveillance centers, surface-to-air missile systems, anti-ship cruise missile positions, and drone launch sites. The US claims these installations were involved in Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, IRIB reported that several people were injured by shrapnel from enemy missiles striking a commercial dock in the southern port city of Sirik. The injured have been admitted to Minab Hospital. However, the precise number of casualties has not been immediately released.
The dispute between the two countries over the control and safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has intensified further. Iran insists that international vessels use the northern shipping lane under its control, while the US advocates for the use of the southern route. Additionally, the conventional shipping lane in the middle of the strait remains virtually impassable due to concerns about mines.
Amidst these developments, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has cut short his visit to Najaf, Iraq, and returned to Tehran. He had gone there to participate in the funeral ceremonies of the deceased Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian media reported that he also had plans to meet with top Iraqi government officials during his visit.
Khamenei’s body is to be taken from Najaf to Karbala, and then returned to Mashhad city in Iran. He is scheduled to be buried there on July 9.
The recent attacks and retaliatory stances have further complicated the security situation in the Middle East. The risk of new conflict is particularly escalating around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transportation routes.
