Today, Saturday (May 30), marks the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Martyred President Ziaur Rahman. On this day in 1981, he was assassinated by some misguided members of the army at Chittagong Circuit House.

To mark the occasion, BNP has announced an eight-day program from May 25 to June 1. As part of the program, black flags will be hoisted nationwide, discussion meetings, photo exhibitions, special prayers (Dua Mahfil), and distribution of food and clothing among the destitute will be held.

On Saturday at 6 AM, party flags were lowered to half-mast and black flags were hoisted at the central office in Nayapaltan and party offices across the country. Later, at 11 AM, Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman will lay wreaths and offer Fatiha at Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Senior party leaders will also be present during this time.

After paying respects, the Prime Minister will participate in a program to distribute food and clothing among the destitute in the Manik Mia Avenue area of the capital. Additionally, this program will be continuously held in 16 other locations in the capital.

Meanwhile, at 9:30 AM, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Advisor Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, along with leaders of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, will pay homage to the mausoleums of Martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Later, he will participate in a program organized by lawyers near the High Court Mazar area to distribute goods among the destitute. Additionally, BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan will participate in a program organized in front of FDC in Karwan Bazar.

During the Liberation War of 1971, Ziaur Rahman read out the declaration of independence from the Kalurghat Radio Station in Chittagong. He was the Sector Commander of Sector 1 and the commander of ‘Z Force’. For his contributions to the Liberation War, he was awarded the title ‘Bir Uttom’.

Ziaur Rahman was born on January 19, 1936, in Bagmara village, Gabtali, Bogura. Following the political changeover on November 7, 1975, he came to the center of state power and subsequently became the eighth President of Bangladesh.

During his rule, multi-party democracy was introduced in Bangladesh. He is also noted for his canal-digging program in the agriculture sector, export of manpower, and his initiative to establish the South Asian regional alliance SAARC.
