On the first day of the holy Eid al-Adha, thousands of worshippers offered Eid prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, Palestine.

Despite an atmosphere of war and tension, Muslims flocked to the mosque courtyard on Wednesday (May 27) to participate in the Eid congregation. Meanwhile, the Israel-Gaza situation has once again come into focus due to alleged violations of the ongoing ceasefire.

According to Anadolu news agency, on Wednesday, the first day of the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday, the courtyards around the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem were filled with worshippers. Thousands of Muslims offered their Eid prayers there.

Eid al-Adha is observed in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s (PBUH) readiness to sacrifice his own son at the command of Almighty Allah. He is also known as Abraham to Christians and Jews. On this day, Muslims sacrifice animals and distribute the meat among the poor members of society.

This significant festival in the Islamic calendar is being celebrated at a time when the ceasefire agreement, effective since last October, has been repeatedly violated.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 880 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was announced on October 10 last year.

Additionally, more than 2,645 people have been injured. The objective of this ceasefire agreement was to halt Israeli aggression. In the conflict that commenced in October 2023, over 72,000 people have been killed, with the majority being women and children.

Furthermore, more than 172,000 people have been injured. As a result of the war, approximately 90 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure has been extensively destroyed.
